Here at LifeProof we are supercharged to be supporting Shades of Winter for the second year featuring the uber talented Freeskier and Creative Producer Sandra Lahnsteiner. The world premier of her latest documentary CONNECTS is due to be released on the 2nd of November 2018 at the BMW Welt in Munich. We cannot wait to see it!
By producing these documentaries Sandra continuously aims to connect to people and environments. How? by her main means of sports in all its facets.
Without knowing each other, pro mountain biker Hannah Barnes from Scotland and Austrian freeskier Sandra Lahnsteiner set off to a trip to Iceland together. Their plan is to explore the Troll Peninsula while doing both their sports: freeskiing and mountain biking.
Hannah however, is only an average skier; how will she feel following Sandra, a pro freeskier with steep skiing experience, into the backcountry? Will she be able to leave her comfort zone, and how can Sandra support her? Vice versa, Sandra will chase the mountain bike girl on the challenging single trails in the vast country of Iceland.
By putting on the others' shoes, the athletes show unseen vulnerability when things turn messy and stressful. The film CONNECTS prompts the audience to connect and identify with Hannah and Sandra and become excited to see how they cope with the challenges along the way. Iceland looks off the scale in the imagery and few sneak peeks we’ve seen.
LifeProof is the perfect companion for this adventure. While making this documentary Sandra and Hannah had to battle many elements so keeping your phone SNOWPROOF, WATERPROOF, DROPPROOF & DIRTPROOF was essential. Sandra and Hannah alternated between the 4 proof FRĒ and 3 proof NËXT cases. LifeActiv accessories were also a must to complete this mission of theirs!
We had a chat with Sandra and Hannah just before the documentary was due to drop, to see how exactly CONNECTS came about and get the inside scoop from the Iceland adventure!
HOW DID YOU AND HANNAH MEET AND DECIDE TO GO ON THIS ADVENTURE?
Sandra: Well, actually I’ve never met Hannah before. We actually went on this trip without knowing each other. When she joined the BMW Mountains team two years ago we started chatting on Instagram and remember seeing a picture of her skiing and I was like “oh cool, Hannah (the pro mountainbiker) likes skiing - and I (the pro freeskier) likes mountainbiking - so it would be awesome to get to know her, go on a trip together and share our both sports."
Hannah: Sandra got in touch and suggested we do a joint adventure, combining both of our sports, in a country new to both of us! And here we are!
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR ABOUT THIS WHOLE ADVENTURE?
Sandra: Not knowing how good the other athlete will actually be, when wearing each other’s shoes. I hoped to be a good enough mountain biker to cope up with Hannah and Hannah hoped the skiing would be ok for her. And - if we were able to do both sports within this one trip. So we went to Iceland in May and normally this is the time of the year when lower down all the snow is melted and the trails for biking open up. But 2018 the snow came pretty late and the weather was really hard, lots of rain, still snow… so we had to take what we could.
Hannah: Potentially having a very steep and exposed mountain and skiing is the only way to get off!
WAS IT AS SCARY AS YOU IMAGINED?
Sandra: I’m generally not a scared person. I’m always open for new challenges and I knew from the beginning that this idea and the trip will be a challenge in many ways. So nothing was really scary, but I was relieved everything worked out, we had no major crashes on both sides and had a trip of a lifetime for sure.
Hannah: I imagined it to be scary at times, and it was.
DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW ABOUT YOURSELF FROM THIS SHADES OF WINTER CONNECTS CHALLENGE?
Sandra: I feel I can always learn something new. Whatever I do. Every day, I get constantly inspired by other people, sports, projects. So with CONNECTS it was really cool to see how Hannah approaches life and sports. I’m such a performance driven person while Hannah might take things easier but still is successful.
TELL US SOMETHING FUNNY THAT HAPPENED WHILE ON THE SHOOT, THAT WE DIDN’T SEE ON THE DOCUMENTARY?
Sandra: The weather was ridiculously changable. We had snowfall, rain and sun in the one day. It was a case of make a plan and be ready to have a plan B while then executing plan C…or maybe even plan A! We could just laugh by the end. Hannah is such a funny person, she’d constantly play her dry-Scottish-humor card on the crew and always got us laughing!
Hannah: The lengthy debate between Sandra and I at the top of a steep ridge, Sandra trying to persuade me to climb higher, me refusing because it was too dangerous! While the camera crew & guide were trying to control themselves whilst filming and not laugh at the increasingly funny debate. I'll always remember and laugh when thinking back to that moment.
WHAT LIFEPROOF PRODUCTS DID YOU USE ON THIS ADVENTURE?
Hannah: I used the phone cases NËXT, it’s very sleek and also so practical.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE LIFEPROOF FEATURES?
Sandra: 1000% - the DropProof! It saves my phone many times a day especially when outdoors. And I’m outdoors a lot, I always have my phone with me, while skiing, ski touring and biking. I want be able to take photos, connect with friends, you know - the whole social media game - and having my phone safe is so important. I also love the DirtProof A LOT - is amazing! I couldn’t imagine now not using these cases!
Hannah: To stop my phone from getting wet or damaged in any conditions!
WERE THE LIFEPROOF PRODUCTS USEFUL ON YOUR ADVENTURE, IF SO, CAN YOU SHARE AN EXAMPLE?
Sandra: So many times I drop my phone, I’ll always just be like thank you Lifeproof and smile. Everyone looks at me and is like OH! Why is she so relaxed. Not having to worry about my phone in any life situations is really great.
Hannah: Of course, I came home with a working phone after it getting some abuse on that trip, so I'd consider that pretty useful.
LifeProof will also be sharing sneak peeks and exclusives from the World Premier on Tuesday from Munich.
